The brain is the control center of our body and allows you to move, think, feel, and breathe; it is truly one of our most important organs. Therefore, it’s imperative that we nourish it to provide us with fuel needed to help it function properly and stay healthy. The foods we eat play a huge role in the structure and health of our brains. Research shows that the best brain foods are the same ones that protect your heart and blood vessels and can help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Consider including the following:

  • Green, leafy vegetables: These plant-based foods may help slow cognitive decline as they are high in nutrients like vitamin K, vitamin C, lutein, folate, and beta carotene. Some examples would be kale, spinach, & broccoli.
  • Berries: these foods are very high in antioxidants and something called flavonoids, which can be linked to improving memory. Try increasing your intake of fruits like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries!
  • Fatty fishes: these are an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids; a nutrient that has been linked to lowering blood levels of beta-amyloid, which is a protein that has been shown to cause damage of those people with Alzheimer’s disease. Some of the best Omega 3 sources of fatty fishes include salmon or tuna.
  • Nuts and seeds: these foods are also very rich in unsaturated or healthy fatty acids like Omega 3, as well as an excellent source of protein. Walnuts, in particular, have been studied to show their effects on improving memory.

A positive mindset, along with knowledge of healthy foods, are the best nourishment for boosting brainpower.
