Bulletin de juin 2024

Skin is the largest organ in the body, serving as the first line of defense against pathogens. Studies show that exposure to environmental toxins (most concentrated in our own homes!) can cause functional issues of the immune, reproductive and digestive systems and are linked to obesity, diabetes and cancer.

Environmental toxins can come from the air you breathe (fragrances and products released into your space), skincare products (absorbed regularly), foods that are being consumed and environmental pollutants.

Here are some simple ideas to begin creating a safer environment for a healthier future.

Be mindful of the products you’re using daily such as home fragrances/candles, cleaning solutions/disinfectants, soaps/detergents and deodorant/sunscreens/lotions.

Beware of harmful chemicals such as aerosols (propellants carry ingredients like butane and propane), fragrances (proprietary term companies use to hide harmful chemicals), sulfates, parabens and heavy metals.

Unsure of a product/ingredient? These resources can serve as a guide:
• Think Dirty App – Look up products while out shopping
• Environmental Working Group – Database of thousands of ingredients with health risks and hazards

With more time being spent outside, it is also important to protect skin from the elements. Opt for toxin-free non-nano zinc oxide sunscreen to protect skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Avoid synthetic pesticides found in products such as DEET and search for natural ingredients like citronella for bug repellents.

Improving your environment doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Start by picking one product to swap like deodorant or sunscreen and remember to strive for progress not perfection!
